Two to three camps of stranded people in Mirpur, Dhaka were demolished by Mirpur city. Around 200 camp dwellers became homeless now. According to newspapers of Dhaka, the Mayor of the city area ordered to evict these camps. According to sources these people were living in the area for 49 years illegally, the Mayor said.
About 250,000 to 300,000 people are stranded in more than 66 camps of Bangladesh. These non Bengalis supported Pakistan to be united, before December 1971. They had their own houses and properties but due to emergence of new country Bangladesh, they were thrown out of their houses in 1971. The International Committee of Red Cross established shanty camps, so they could be repatriated to Pakistan, but Pakistan did not fulfill its responsibility, though Pakistan signed several international treaties to bring them back.
Governments of Bangladesh and Pakistan must sit down and resolve this long time issue purely on humanitarian ground to protect these ill fated people.
Several organizations of camp dwellers are approaching court today for rescue.
